Recognizing Those Committed to Making a Difference
William H. Johnson
William H. (Bill) Johnson spent the majority of his career in the medical administration field, while remaining active in Albuquerque and New Mexico public service communities. Bill served as CEO of University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) from July 1977 to June 1997, helping transform the entity from a county hospital known as BCMC (Bernalillo County Medical Center) which primarily served the indigent population; to a full-fledged, university-affiliated medical center.

It goes without saying that the size and scope of the hospital grew exponentially during Bill’s 20-year tenure. With Johnson at the helm, UNMH transitioned into a top-quality, tertiary-care facility – the only one of its kind in New Mexico. His vision helped the facility “to better serve the needs of New Mexico residents and give them the level of care they deserved,” according to a former business associate of Johnson’s.

Bill and his staff worked closely with administration and faculty affiliated with the University of New Mexico Medical School, to better integrate its medical professionals into the operation of the hospital itself, working to transform the facility into an effective community resource, and a beacon of pride for the University. Johnson also worked collaboratively with the Medical School to provide necessary subsidies for faculty salaries to help ensure that the highest-quality faculty be recruited to the University.

One sign of a successful CEO is maintaining a positive bottom line; toward this end and under Johnson’s direction, the hospital funneled cash flow back into physical plant development and growth. For example, Jim oversaw development of pediatric services at the hospital into a full-fledged Children’s Hospital, among other significant accomplishments.
Following his retirement from UNMH, Bill served as Secretary of Human Services for the state from September 1997 to January 2000, at the request of then-Governor Gary Johnson. His responsibilities included providing oversight for the Income Support and Medicaid programs. Bill continues to serve the community through involvement with community organizations and their governing boards, including the Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, Hispano Chamber of Commerce, ACCION New Mexico, Albuquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau, United Way of New Mexico, Association of Commerce and Industry, Rotary Del Norte, Junior Achievement, YMCA of Central New Mexico.
