Recognizing Those Committed to Making a Difference
William (Bill) Connor
Las Cruces resident William (Bill) Connor is supervisor of customer service, outlying areas, for the N. Water St. location of El Paso Electric. That’s his day job. It’s his community service activities that fill the rest of his time. Letters of nomination on behalf of Mr. Connor attested to his tireless contributions in a variety of endeavors, from serving as chair of the Dońa County Legislative Coalition since 2007, pulling together diverse entities for a common cause; to donning a pair of dancing shoes to raise funds for the sports dance team at New Mexico State University.

Bill is, by the way, “a faithful Aggie” who has served his alma mater as president of the NMSU Alumni Association, traveling across the state and nation to rally support for the school. In serving the wider community, he has participated in fund-raisers too numerous to name. More telling are the numbers of times Mr. Connor has risen to leadership roles within any organization he joins. This he does quietly, without fanfare. Generally, Bill’s works speak for themselves – but please allow these brief words to help tell his story.

Mr. Connor served the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce as its chair in 2007; in 2010, he chaired the chamber’s 2nd Annual Total Resource Campaign, and continues to chair the chamber’s Military Affairs Committee, which he started and has stewarded over the past seven years. Under Bill’s leadership, the committee has grown in membership (over 30) and scope, to include sponsoring “a day of appreciation” at White Sands Missile Range to show community support for the base, its personnel and their families.

He continues to chair the White Sands International Film Festival, and is a former chair of the American Red Cross – Southwest New Mexico Chapter (2003), and the Alliance for Regional Military Support, Arms (2005). Mr. Connor serves as a commissioner on the New Mexico Border Authority, and is a graduate of Leadership New Mexico, serving on its Core Curriculum Committee.

“What strikes me most about Bill Connor is that he gives so much to the community, but does so honestly and without ever seeking recognition or praise," wrote Richard M. Haas, Chair of the Board of Directors for the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce. “It is time to give him some well deserved praise.” From working as a line cook to raise money for hospice care, to service on behalf of the nation’s military, Bill Connor makes good things happen.
