Dr. F. Chris Garcia
Dr. Garcia recieved the UNM Alumni Association Zia Award for outstanding UNM alumni and the UNM Regents' Meritorious Service Medal reflecting his outstanding performance both as a faculty member and as an academic administrator. His students and colleagues continually rank him very highly for the quality of his teaching. He served as interim UNM president, provost and vice president for academic affairs as well as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
In his academic administrative positions he has demonstrated the highest stan- dards of integrity, professionalism and fairness. One of his greatest contributions in times of financial stress of the institution was his ability to make decisions based on the core mission of the University.
In his research, focused on New Mexico government and the political attitudes of Hispanics, he has contributed significantly to the public's understanding of government and political attitudes.
Dr. Garcia has served on dozens of community boards, committees, commissions, etc. with topics as wide ranging as urban ethnic politics, public opinion polls, Albuquerque Charter Revision Task Force, Albuquerque Good Government Group, Human Needs Strategic Planning Group; United Way, etc. Similarly, he has served on UNM committees having to do with virtually every aspect of University life, as well as national professional and higher education organizations.
His University associates regard him as a person who has devoted a lifetime to teaching -both in the classroom and in the community with a willingness to participate in many hard-working, often low profile activities that, taken together, truly transform a community.
