Recognizing Those Committed to Making a Difference
Joseph Abeyta
Mr. Abeyta has been Superintendent of the Santa Fe Indian School since the All Indian Pueblo Council first contracted it in 1977. Under his leadership, the school is now fully accredited by the North Central Association and the New Mexico State Board of Education. Honors include: selection as an exemplary school by the Department of Interior; recognition by the Department of Interior as one of 270 outstanding schools in the nation; named as the New Mexico Sportsmanship School for Best All Around Athletic Program, among several other honors to the school.
In addition, Mr. Abeyta was instrumental in having the school land transferred in trust to the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico to ensure the school will be available in the future to educate the young people of the Pueblos.
The 19 Pueblo Governors ofNM have recognized Mr. Abeyta for his work done in behalf of Native American youth. He also serves as a member of the National Congress of American Indians and its Steering Committee.
He has also received a proclamation from the 10 Pueblo Governors of New Mexico recognizing work done on behalf of Native American youth as well as recognition for Service to Indian People by the Eight Northern Governors and a Meritorious Service Award from the Department of the Interior.
