Richard Melton
Chief of police for Los Alamos County for four years, Richard Melton earned an impressive track record at the Farmington Police Department where he worked for 21 years-moving from being a patrol officer, to a detective, and then an administrator-before retiring in 1998.
Throughout his career with the Farmington and Los Alamos Police Departments, Melton has demonstrated his visionary leadership. He has implemented many new programs centered on community policing and providing professional public-safety services.
In the summer of 2000, his training and experience allowed him to demonstrate essential leadership skills that helped Los Alamos recover from a devastating fire.
Through his active and broad involvement with the New Mexico Municipal League, he has been a driving source behind many legislative efforts. He is recognized statewide as an advocate for protecting the quality of life of our citizens and promoting the advancement of professional law enforcement.
As a leader of New Mexico's law enforcement, he has been involved in numerous professional organizations. Melton has been an active member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police since the mid1980s. His status in this prestigious organization has landed him assignments to several international committees, including Environmental Crimes and Ethics.
He is also a member of the Police Executive Research Forum and the State Association of Chiefs of Police.
He was also the driving force behind organizing "Policing 2000" and "Policing in the 21st Century" annual statewide conferences that began in 1995 and are attended by hundreds of New Mexico law enforcement professional as well as nationally known speakers.
Melton has dedicated the last 25 years of his professional life to public service. He contributes not only to our local government by being knowledgeable about his job and the job of the Police Department, but he also lives what he preaches and mentors others to excel in their work.
