Recognizing Those Committed to Making a Difference
Jane Batson
Employed by Eastern New Mexico University at Roswell as Chair of the Division of Health, Jane Batson instituted Medicaid billing for services delivered in the dental clinic and through a dental van that resulted in revenues supporting the hiring of the program's central ancillary staff and dentists. As a result, the program does not use university general funds for operations. She has mobilized community partnerships to develop solutions for health-related issues, such as:
· Access to healthcare,
· Development of new health-related educational programs, and
· Involvement of community in health-related decision-making.
In service to the community, Batson chairs the Community Care Network, an organization of over 30 agencies addressing issues related to families and children. An advisor to the Chavez County Health Planning Council, she was appointed by the County Commission to guide the formation and operation of the 40-member board that acts as the advisory group to the commission for all health-related issues. She also is a member and former chair of the Chaves County Material Child Health Council-after being appointed by the County Commission to address issues for women and children. The Council has significantly increased access to prenatal care for women in the first trimester of pregnancy.
At present, she chairs REACH 2000, which is a nonprofit organization responsible for the oversight of the Unity Center housing a teen-guided entrepreneurial business called PHAT Frames. She also finds time to serve as president of the Roswell High School Band Boosters, and volunteer in the choir at Grace Community Church.
Batson is a dedicated community healthcare provider, a strong advocate for the community's low-income residents, a caring nurse and an example for all community healthcare workers.
