Recognizing Those Committed to Making a Difference
Maryann Walker
Maryann Walker started the Eddy County Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and has been coordinator of the Eddy County Community Action Team since 1995. She works closely with the community and the DARE program on the dangers of underage drinking and driving. By serving on the county's DWI Advisory Council and the DWI Task Force, she has earned appreciation and strong support. In 1988, she received the Westinghouse Community Service Award for the coordination and education of drunk driving prevention. She has been selected to attend the National MADD Conference as the delegate from New Mexico for three consecutive years.
She organizes the annual MADD/CARS (Carlsbad Automotive Restoration Society) Poker Run to raise funds as well as the Balloonists Against Drunk Driving Hot Air Balloon Rally. She has been coordinator of the Kodak Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta Designated Driver Program, credited with reducing the amount of alcohol-related incidents during the event.
Currently, she is preparing MADD for certification on the Victim's Advocacy Board, which will give victims of DWI crimes a voice in court.
