History
The year 2013 marks the 44th anniversary of the New Mexico Distinguished Public Service Awards Program. Established in 1969 in cooperation with the National Civil Service League, the program receives sponsorship from numerous universities, associations, and government institutions.

Distinguished Public Service Award Programs exist in most states throughout the United States. In addition, more than 10 states have used the New Mexico Awards Program as a model. The Distinguished Public Service Award is considered the highest award in each state.

Individuals are nominated by the local, state, or federal agencies where they are employed, or by private citizens who have knowledge of their exceptional contributions to the public service. Those selected for awards are honored by the Governor, who presents an award to each recipient following a description of the awardee's exceptional contributions made to improve the public service.

The Governor appoints a number of residents from around the state to serve as Awards Council Members for one-year terms. These citizens are representative of the State geographically and of the categories for award consideration.

This year's Distinguished Public Service Awards will undoubtedly launch public service recognition into the new century!
